Ryokan Sutani

"Ryokan Sutani" is located just west of the main gate of Izumo Taisha Shrine and has a great location for shrine visits. Walking through dusk is good, but visiting shrine in the morning haze and a commanding atmosphere is ineffably comfortable.

The initiation of the inn is so old that it is not clear when the business started. It is said that this inn has been operating at least since the Edo period because there remains a visitor’s book at that time. The seventh generation owner is now carefully taking care of the building which is over 200 years old as the previous generation did. He is taking a good care of the garden, too. This beautiful garden which you can see from the guest room makes us forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is also a history in the furniture. It is decorated casually and simple in a good sense, so you can feel the warmth of Japanese architecture. The dinner made by the owner is kaiseki cuisine using a special seasonal seafood dish which was pickled at the Taisha Harbor. A simple and careful cooking which expresses the goodness of the material is impressive.

It is regarded that this inn did not destroy the historic building and build a new rebar building. Recently, many Japanese inns have everything in the guest room so guests rarely leave their room and have contact with other people. Originally, however, various people have stayed at a Japanese inn, and the guests would have some consideration to others greet each other. The atmosphere of this inn makes us remind such a thing.
