"Shintatsuan”, located in Higashimachi of an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings on Miyajima, is a typical Miyajima machiya. It is a long, narrow building with a narrow frontage. (Machiya is a traditional wooden house. The historical appearance of machiya is one of the charms of Miyajima.)

It was built around 1930 and it is said that neighbors used to come and go through the earthen floor inside the building as if it were a small alley connecting the streets in front and behind the building in the old days. "Shintatsuan” is located near the Miyajima Pier Terminal, halfway to the World Heritage Site "Itsukushima Shrine," in a quiet neighborhood.

The Miyajima machiya was renovated and turned into an inn "Shintatsuan” for private use, limited to one group, starting in the summer of 2023. The interior design creates the relaxed atmosphere of an old private home. The bathrooms were redesigned and focused on cleanliness. The building is also all-electric. In addition, the exterior design has been restored based on a trace survey by experts, and the wooden frame has been reinforced to improve earthquake resistance. In the spring of 2024, it has reopened as a comfortable and safe inn to stay. Since the entire building is for private use, you can relax and enjoy your time with your companions with no worries.

The earthen floor on the first floor is an old-fashioned space that offers an emotional lodging experience. Behind the earthen floor is a mini-kitchen equipped with a microwave oven, electric kettle, and refrigerator. The owner is stationed in a separate building on the same property and can respond immediately to any problems, so you can stay at ease. The Japanese-style room, used as a bedroom, is located on the second floor and can accommodate up to three people.

Despite its location in the town center, it is very quiet at night. Sometimes you can hear deer and birds singing. It is our hope that our guests will have an extraordinary time on Miyajima and enjoy a relaxing and calm lodging experience.

Room

The guest rooms consist of a room floored with tatami mats on the first floor and a bedroom on the second floor. The bedroom is a Japanese-style room connected to the front room by two rooms, and the ceiling surface of the front room shows beams. Wall colors of alcove or floor-side wall in a Japanese-style room are eye-catching, imitating the deep indigo with a slight green tinge that was popular in the capital during the Heian period. The room has a narrow but surprisingly relaxing veranda. The rooms are equipped with bedding such as low rebound mattresses, pillows, and down quilts for a comfortable sleep.

Meal

Dinner is not provided, but we can introduce you to restaurants on the island (sushi, Japanese, Western, creative cuisine, etc.).

If you wish to have breakfast, there are three options. Please choose according to your needs. We will ask you when you check in.

1. You can eat morning meal at “Miyajima Bistro Cuillere”, a 2-minute walk from the hotel, from 8:40 a.m. It can be served at the restaurant or took out for 1,000 yen or more.
2. If you want to eat early in the morning, we can prepare sandwiches and soup from the same restaurant in the refrigerator the evening before for 1,000 yen and up.
3. We have handmade bamboo charcoal bagels & bagels of various flavors (frozen) made from konnyaku flour at our hotel. Please defrost and bake in a toaster oven. Prices are from 250 yen per piece.

Facilities

On the first floor, there is a room floored with tatami mats and bathroom along the earthen floor. There is a mini-kitchen at the end of the earthen floor. The entire building has been renovated. In particular, the baths are designed to provide a comfortable and clean feeling with enameled bathtubs that allow the guests to stretch out their legs, walls and ceilings covered with cypress wood, and a heating system for changing rooms.

The second-floor bedroom (Japanese-style room) can be used for a matcha (powdered green tea) experience, and the Japanese-style rooms on the first and second floors can be used together as a rental space for various Japanese-style experiences and exhibitions.

In addition, there is a miscellaneous goods sales space in an adjacent annex. It offers a wide variety of goods with a Japanese taste, including crafts from Miyajima. Please take a look. You may find a special item.
