Salthouse

The first guest house in Hakatajima island.

In March 2016, the first guest house opened in Hakatajima island on Shimanami Kaido. This inn is located at the center and intricate place which reminds us of the past life of the town.

The interior of this inn has an atmosphere similar to a Studio Ghibli animated film produced by Miyazaki Hayao. Originally, this building was a dental clinic which was opened in around 1930. we have renovated almost all of it by ourselves over a whole year. The renovated building with a small window of the reception desk and a medicine shelf retains the atmosphere of the time. Repainted pillars and window flames have essence of both Japanese and Western styles, and they fit strangely into the whole atmosphere.

You can feel the owner’s sophisticated sense from books, paintings and small articles in a shared space. In has a relaxed atmosphere, so you can’t help spending a long time there. It is a very good space for communication special to a guest house. There is a warm and gentle light, and it will bring an encounter with people staying at this inn.

The owner says, “I feel as if I were traveling through the conversation with my guests.” The inn with a gentle light like a night-light of the island is waiting for the next meeting.
