Hakata-jima island is famous as a production area of salt in Shimanami kaido. Matsuzaki Ryokan is located in the middle of Kitaura area which has a characteristic atmosphere of Setouchi village. It takes about 25 minutes by bicycle from the bridge between Hakatajima island and Omishima island. On the way there, there is the point commands a view of the whole Tatara-ohashi Bridge. Few cars are going by this road, so you can enjoy cycling refreshingly. Of course this place is not touristy. The inn itself is 100 years old and the building has a nostalgic atmosphere as an old Setouchi house.
It is very clean and well kept inside the building. The clay wall of the living room which used as a dining place can hardly be seen today and has a nostalgic feel. Each room also has the same settled atmosphere. This coziness is definitely the good point of this inn.
The rate of this inn is reasonable and you can enjoy a delicate dish which used lots of Setouchi fish. An upgraded dish basically consists of fried stone fish, high quality fish of Setouchi, and rice cooked with shredded sea bream, so you can eat your fill of Setouchi fish. Sea bream in Japanese sweet and peppery vegetable sauce which is seldom seen in other place and well-seasoned rice cooked with shredded sea bream tasted very good. I hear that the master trained cooking in Kansai area when he was young.
A cheerful third-generation female manager is from Omishima island next to Hakatajima island. She clears the atmosphere of this inn. The sight that young men stayed on the same day shake hands with the female manager and fit in the picture together represents a feature of this inn.
