Onfunayado Tomonyan

A Private Villa Nestled in the Cat-Lined Alleys of Tomonoura.

As you walk past the ferry terminal toward Tomo Port, you will find a set of ancient stone steps leading up to Enpuku-ji Temple. Here, cats lounge lazily in the sun, creating a peaceful, timeless scene. Tomonyan sits right in the heart of this "cat landscape," halfway up those very steps. Adjacent to our terrace is a local cat shelter, where many feline friends reside. From the windows of this hillside retreat, you can gaze out over the shimmering waters of Tomo Port. Stepping outside, you can enjoy a gentle stroll to the temple, greeted by lounging cats along the way—a moment of pure serenity that feels like a beautiful slice taken out of everyday life.

Originally built in the 1920s, this house has been a home to many residents over the decades. Throughout its long history, it has undergone various additions and renovations; discovering these architectural traces of the past is part of the charm. In July 2020, the house was thoughtfully renovated to provide modern comfort while preserving its "Kominka" (traditional house) soul, reopening as a private vacation villa.

The villa accommodates up to two guests, featuring two semi-double beds. (Please note that as we do not provide extra bedding, children must be of an age where they can share a bed with an adult.)

One of the house's most special features is the three-tatami-mat study. It houses the actual desk and chair used by the world-renowned animation director Hayao Miyazaki (of Studio Ghibli) during his stay in Tomonoura while developing the film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Whether you are reading, reflecting, or seeking your own creative spark, this room—with its historic furniture and stunning window views—is the perfect place for inspiration to strike.

Tomonoura is a port town where the vibrant rhythm of daily life blends seamlessly with deep historical roots. As you wander through the town, you will find yourself drifting between modern living and ancient stories.
